Like someone on here said “had to be there”. And I was also. This show was amazing and I seen many. Everything about it was amazing!

We got Mountains to climb...
Very nice show!
They go for it with a very diverse 1st set and then after Box of Rain they just jam thru the rest of the show.
The boys are cohesive and Garcia shreds and Lesh pounds- just as it should be!
I like Vince's vocals on Samson and HERE COMES SUNSHINE but am also glad that is about all that I really notice him on lyrically. As far as his playing goes he does well to be part of the jams without becoming the ghost of Ned.
And since i don't say it enough. Thanks Bob when you give those lyrics an extra push it inspires everyone!!!
When the band is on. The band is on. Not sure there is much else you or I or anyone else can add.
and yes the P.I.T.B is a trip, midi flute solo and all.

Playin'
Those who seem to be teleported back 20 years?
Think about this date in 1973. Another all Playin in the Band also 18 mins. In length! I'm certain it was coincidence more than karma but still worth mentioning.

One of the last Truly Great Shows
The Victim Crazy Fingers Playin sequence is fantastic as good as advertised. The Playin is downright spooky at times, sounds 20 years younger truly a monster performance. The rest is all very well performed. The lIberty encore is also rather nice.

Five for Playin'
Really, enough cannot be said about this version of Plaing in the Band. Scary shit. Some liken it '73, but I would have to say this version breaks new ground.

Hearing the Bass
Betty Ford must have been listening to another version of this show- since there are 3, because you can hear Phil just fine here- and a good thing that is!

Highlight of 1993
Perhaps not as front to back good as 05-27-1993, 05-26 is a damn good show. Playin' in the Band is one of their best versions ever...the jam must be heard...Garcia is fast and edgy, explorative and energetic throughout and the boys sail through uncharted waters to space land...
First set is well played...Deal is a good close.
The rest of the second set is quite good, the common pairing of Victim>Crazy Fingers is pulled off nicely and the band sounds in good form and make their way to the launch pad for Playin'
Post drums, there's no complaints, the finish out strong
As far as 1993, it's a 5 star show...the Playin in 5 star, any era...China Doll is one of the best out there...

Cal Expo 93'
Sorry but must disagree with Betty Ford Sure I was there but This show deserves above average rating Just the other day I was listenig to some summer 93 with guys who been seeing the Dead since the late seventies. All agreed that Jerry's Guitar work in 93' was excellent. very clean not hiding behind alot of effect. Very few mistakes Very agrressive. In some respects he hadn't palyed as well since the Coma. As Far as the Band as A whole they just never got back to where they were With Brent late 89-90 . But IMHO the Spring/Summer of 93' is the best they sounded post summer 90' Back to the subject of this show. Very Rare Opening with Samson Jerry plays some pretty mean guitar. HCS was probably among the best they did. One of the best1-2 openers of the year. All the songs in the 1 set are performed well. The Playin' is among the ALL TIME BEST. It is mindbending. The Last China Doll for me and probalby the last Great one. Its much more powerful than usual at the end. Just a couple of standouts from a killer show from a Fantastic run all three nights at Expo. Betty Ford should take another listen. They didn't even come close to playing this well in 94 or 95

Seriously, folks
After finally listening to the tons of shows I've d-loaded in the past month, I felt compelled to write this review - since reviews are basically what has helped me decide which shows to look at. This show is not bad, but I was hard pressed to find it that great. For a sbd, the quality is kind of low. Unless you have an EQ or one of those god-awful "loudness" buttons, you will not hear the bass. Versions of songs here are just whatever, not four or five starworthy. Giving a show a high rating because there is a good version of one of the songs or giving it a high rating because you were there and had fun does a disservice to all of us just trying to build a good collection of good shows.
I got this show because I was looking for a good sbd of "arrow" and "victim". Misled by some reviews, and it's just not here.
If you are looking for a great sbd from the late era dead, check out 3/23/95 or 10/5/94 sbds.

Guess you had to be there...
I was. Samson to open the show kills the word 'mediocre' used in a previous review, right off the bat. Then, of course, the Playin', during which I forgot what year it was, and those drums... put your headphones on and listen to them and tell me that's mediocre.
